Alpha Sow
Céramist

Project : [LAIT MIRACULEUX]

Alpha Sow has practiced the art of ceramics for over 30 years. He is an artist, but also an instructor who, in the 1960s, acted as student teacher at the Centre de formation artisanale de Dakar. In the following years, he participated in numerous exhibitions in Senegal and abroad.

1992 marked a decisive turning point in the life of this artist. Among other events, he participated in the 5th Salon of Visual Arts in Dakar and the Biennale de Dak'Art. In 1994, he participated in the International Toubab Dialaw Symposium in Senegal, where he introduced 21 women to modern ceramic technique.

After many years of independent practice, he began an association with the ceramicist Jegou Claire. In 1998 they founded the Clairalpha Ceramique Japoo ceramics studio, with the support of the l'Association francaise d'action artistique (AFAA), and the European Union's Support for Cultural Initiatives Programme.

Notable among his other experiences is an apprenticeship with the Staaliche Fachschule Fur Keramik in Germany, and an apprenticeship in sculpting cement monuments at the Maison de la culture de Dakar with Quebecois artist Roger Langevin.
