After his training in photography at the Dakar School of Fine Arts (1978) and at Columbia University in Washington (1989), Djibril Sy has participated in a dozen international exhibitions and has taken part in several artist residencies in Senegal, France, Swizterland, England and the USA. Professionally, he worked as the official photographer to the Mayor of Dakar between 1984 and 1994, and as a professor of photography at the Dakar School of Fine Arts between 1993 and 1996.

He is currently working on the subject of the talibes, Dakar's street children, and on the immigration of Senegalese people to large urban centres.
